About the anomaly scan

An anomaly scan is a detailed ultrasound of your baby, usually done at around 18 to 22 weeks of pregnancy. It is also called a fetal anatomy scan or a level 2 ultrasound. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not X-rays.

It can find many structural conditions, but not all of them. A normal scan is reassuring; it is not a guarantee.

Fetal echo is a closer look at the baby’s heart. Your doctor or Omnicare will tell you if you need it.

Expect about 30 to 45 minutes, longer if the baby is hard to see. Omnicare will tell you if you need to prepare.

What the scan looks at

  • Head and brain, face and spine
  • Heart, abdomen and kidneys
  • Arms and legs
  • Placenta, umbilical cord and the fluid around the baby
  • The baby’s growth

What to bring to Omnicare
